Colin Reid – Tilt

Topic took an interest in Reid’s formidable skill as a guitarist over a year ago and Tilt is the first of what I hope will be many recordings from him on the Topic label.

It’s vital that the more successful labels on the folk and acoustic scene invest in the young instrumental talent of the day instead of concentrating on those who offer only vocal attraction. There are though, superbly crafted guest vocals from usual suspects Eddie Reader and Boo Hewerdine not that the music needs aiding in this way.

The guitar work is awesome, and should firmly set his reputation amongst today’s crop of new steel strung guitar stars as well as taking his sound to a wider audience. But moreover this is an album with integrity as Reid leaves the stage for the ‘Lenny Tristanoesque’ ‘Crimes against Music’ in which one of my favourite pianists and fellow Belfast musician Brian Connor takes over to play one of the many Reid compositions.

This is the work of an artiste who wants the world to enjoy his music not simply marvel at his undoubted technical prowess as is so often the way with guitar heroes.
