MADDY PRIOR BAND – Hooked On Glory (Park Records PRKCD 110)

For those that can cast their minds back far enough to remember the early 80’s you may be lucky enough to remember the Maddy Prior Band. Now, this was a time when Maddy had vacated her position as lead singer with Steeleye so that she could develop her own (and Rick Kemp’s) song-writing skills. The saying ‘of their time’ could not have been better coined for Hooked On Winning and Going For Glory that now comes re-packaged as this double disk set. I suppose this period that included the likes of Julie Covington and Barbara Dickson strutting their stuff in a more commercial vein should also have seen Prior on a similar stage. Unfortunately it was not be, but not for want of trying as anyone who heard the track “Deep In The Darkest Night” will testify. Perhaps it was due to the old ‘you’ve sold out’ syndrome that still saturates the cosy and defensive nature that has inflicted the ‘folk’ scene for so many years. Whatever, this is a fine brace of albums and a must have addition to any collector of all things Maddy.
