Captain Of The Lost Waves’ Hidden Gems – Chapter 3 Mysterium Tremendum, the trilogy closer to the critically acclaimed Hidden Gems Chapter 1 and 2, was made in the midst of strict lockdown and huge family health challenges which are still ongoing. For the Captain It was an incredibly daunting album to make both mentally and physically. The primary four musicians at the core of the recordings put down their own parts in home set up spaces. Unfortunately gigs from the end of May through to September have had to be cancelled due to injuries sustained by the Captain and his family after being caught up in a huge road traffic accident. The impact, both physically and mentally may take a while to fully recover from.
There was distinct albeit subconscious synchronicity and wide eyed determination with this album to be a testament to the music we collectively and individually loved over the decades. A few of these ranging from Jeff Wayne’s War Of The Worlds and Tangerine Dream to early Genesis, Kate Bush and Leonard Cohen, taking in Jean Michel Jarre, Tears For Fears, 10CC, Laurie Anderson, Vangelis, Japan, Talking Heads, Ennio Morricone, Kraftwerk, Zombies, Talk Talk, Harold Budd and Brian Eno to sacred choral and mystical world music.
The Captain is a troubadour, storyteller and free thinking renegade. Removing all of his music from streaming platforms, acknowledging his dream to find true value in music again whilst sounding naive or idealistic the Captain felt compelled to take such a step. Both physical copies and the digital download will only be available from Bandcamp and the Captain’s website/ko-fi page. His musical offerings are inspired by the great songwriters and philosophers of yesteryear. This is visceral music for the mind and body, full of dreamy verses, life affirming choruses and sheer audacity. Where melodic invention meets alternative folk, progressive, world and ambient sounds.
Previously signed to Voiceprint under his natural guise Shaun T Hunter and Quiet Rebellion he released three critically acclaimed albums, two of which were Borders Book Store’s album of the month. Off the back of this he carried out a residency at the famous 12 Bar Club, London. He was also voted Acoustic Roots performer of the year at the Leeds Independent Music Awards in 2005.
He was also voted outstanding songwriter of the year from the Yorkshire Gig Guide Awards 2017.
Making music is a communion to the Captain and much of his work has taken place in a music therapy guise. Playing in secure units, prisons, mental health units and hospitals. The connection is always about the most authentic exchanges between an artist and his audience, based on a shared humanity.
The Captain was chosen by English Folk Expo as just one of 12 English artists to represent team England in the inaugural Global Music Match 2020, an exercise where ninety-six artists from fourteen countries were featured worldwide.
