Terence Blacker announces new album

Terence Blacker

Terence Blacker’s songs of modern life and love have been compared by critics to the work of Jake Thackray, Loudon Wainwright III and Georges Brassens but his style – quirky, tender and funny – is very much his own.

His new album of songs Meanwhile… is released on December 2nd, his fifth album of self-written songs.

Following the highly praised Playing For Time, which was selected by the Sunday Times as one of its Top 100 Albums of 2020, Meanwhile… has been produced by folk luminary Lukas Drinkwater and features the brilliant jazz pianist Dom Pipkin.

The album’s themes reflect the turbulent time of change in which it was written, with sharp, observant songs about lockdown (‘Everyday Hero’), the environment (‘Meanwhile’) and diversity (‘Pale Stale Male’). Its prevailing tone, though, as evidenced in such songs as ‘Other People’s Lives’, ‘The Couple Next Door’ and ‘Not Quite Done’, is intensely personal.

With songs looking back to the past (‘The Swells Sang “After the Ball”’) and forward to the future (‘Keep the Faith’), Meanwhile… strikes a defiantly upbeat note for our uncertain times.

The songs of Terence Blacker are unmistakable. Telling stories from modern life that are hilarious, satirical and heartfelt, they cover all of the Seven Deadly Sins – with a few 21st century ones thrown in for good measure.

Terence has performed at festivals, folk clubs and theatres in the UK and abroad. He has written and presented a BBC Radio 4 series on the history of politically incorrect music and has taken a one-man show to the Edinburgh Fringe.

This year he launched a new show The Shock Of The Old, celebrating in song and word the joys and pains of the 21st century style of ageing. Described by satirist Craig Brown as ‘sharp, knowing comedy with cracking tunes’, it is promoted by Tin Cat Entertainment and will be touring theatres throughout the UK from autumn 2022 into 2023.

Terence is also widely known as an award-winning author of books for adults and children, a broadcaster and newspaper columnist.
