You’ll probably recognise Tanya Brittain’s face and voice as one half of Cornwall-based folk duo The Changing Room, which she created with vocalist Sam Kelly in 2014. The band won all three categories of the 2015 International Pan Celtic Song Contest: Best Original Song (for Tanya’s shanty-style composition ‘Row Boys Row’), Best Traditional Song in a Celtic language (for their rendition of ‘Delyow Sevi’ which is on their new album), and Overall Winner.
Her original songs in Cornish and English language have been performed by a multitude of recording artists and broadcast live on BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 2. The Changing Room’s debut album Behind The Lace is listed in The Telegraph’s Best Folk Music Albums of 2017.
Brittain has written two albums and four EPs for The Changing Room, but Hireth is her first release under her own name. On this self-produced collection, she leaves behind the tales of Cornish wreckers and tin miners. This is a collection of original songs about longing and includes two tracks in Cornish language plus two traditional songs authentic, familiar and grounding, like going back to your roots. Evoking a sense of nostalgia, this album is a worthy addition to the 60’s folk revival section in any collection.
Tanya Brittain says, “It’s taken over two years to complete this project. I write a lot of material for other people so on this album I wanted to create something with its own identity, something uniquely me – a relaxed blend of Breton, Cornish and English folk.”
Tanya’s live performances include appearances at Folk Alliance International (US), Lorient Festival (France), events and venues in Canada and PEI, Costa del Folk (Portugal), and most major UK Folk festivals.
