Following his recent run of intimate headline shows acclaimed alt-folk singer-songwriter Will Varley has announced a major UK headline tour for May 2022.
In October, Varley released his brilliant new album The Hole Around My Head, the first album release on Yellow Cake, a brand-new record label and artist protection entity set up by internationally renowned record producer Cameron McVey (Massive Attack, Portishead, Sugababes, Neneh Cherry).
Containing the singles ‘Live Again’, ‘Pushing Against Us’ and ‘Colour TV’, The Hole Around My Head is the follow-up to 2018’s The Spirit Of Minnie, which was produced by McVey and reached number two in the iTunes Singer Songwriter charts in the UK, number three in Germany and made the top 30 in the US. The new record has been described by Folk Radio as “a magnificent album that mines diamonds of hope from the rock of despair,” while Folking wrote that “the starkness of the album may bring to mind projects like Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska.”
After close to two decades of hard graft (including relentless touring the UK, Europe and North America alongside Valerie June, Frank Turner, The Proclaimers and Billy Bragg) Varley welcomed the chance to join McVey’s new label. “Will’s the Springsteen of his generation to my ears and sensibilities,” comments McVey. “He’s not really a f**king folk singer is he?! This new record is more of an affirmation than a conscious change of direction. The songs are raw and the production almost painfully too honest at times. Will plays and sings like his studio is on fire and he has to finish before it burns to the ground.”
