Sting: The Studio Collection
Solo Career-Spanning Vinyl Box Set On 180-Gram Heavyweight Vinyl
To Be Released September 30th

On September 30, A&M / Interscope Records are proud to release The Studio Collection, a career-spanning vinyl LP box set featuring all of Sting’s seminal solo studio albums brought together for the first time.

The Studio Collection includes eight essential A&M Records albums across eleven LPs – The Dream Of The Blue Turtles (1985), …Nothing Like The Sun (1987) (double LP), The Soul Cages (1991), Ten Summoner’s Tales (1993), Mercury Falling (1996), Brand New Day (1999) (double LP), Sacred Love (2003) (double LP) and The Last Ship (2013) – with both Brand New Day and Sacred Love available on vinyl for the first time ever.

All of the included LPs appear in exact replicas of the original artwork presented in an exceptional slipcase package, with brand new vinyl masters cut at the legendary Abbey Road studios to ensure exceptional audio quality.

Contained within The Studio Collection are some of the most iconic albums and songs of all time, including numerous GRAMMY® Award-winning tracks as well as a plethora of multi-platinum, platinum and gold worldwide awards. Beginning with Sting’s first solo album, the revelatory The Dream Of The Blue Turtles from 1985 – featuring the cream of America’s young jazz musicians in a politically-charged set – through 2013’s The Last Ship, exploring the central themes of homecoming and self-discovery in the North East of England, The Studio Collection showcases Sting’s meticulous songwriting, evocative storytelling, and continual innovation in a groundbreaking mix of musical genres and styles that have continually evolved throughout his remarkable career to date.

From perennial favourites ‘Englishman In New York’, ‘If I Ever Lose My Faith In You’, ‘Fields Of Gold’, ‘Seven Days’ and ‘Shape of My Heart’, to the political ‘We Work The Black Seam’ and ‘Russians’, the gospel-tinged ‘Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot’ and ‘Fill Her Up’, the bossa nova ‘La Belle Dame Sans Regrets’ and ‘Big Lie Small World’, through to the French hip hop of ‘Perfect Love…Gone Wrong’ and the arabesque ‘Desert Rose’, The Studio Collection combines the full breadth and power of Sting, the composer, singer, activist and timeless songwriter, on high-quality heavyweight vinyl.

To complete The Studio Collection, The Studio Collection’s new album 57th & 9th will be released November 11th.

An old favourite – ‘Englishman In New York’:

VARIOUS ARTISTS – Big River Big Songs (Mawson-Wareham Music MWMDVD78)

Perhaps this tremendous DVD should be re-titled “Big Hearts, Big Soul” such is the impact it’s had on me! It goes without saying that Geordie-land has spawned some of this country’s best musicians and actors and (as if you needed any) here is proof that artists the calibre of Kevin Whately, Tim Healy, Jimmy Nail, Lindisfarne, Billy Mitchell, Sting and Mark Knopfler are as welcoming as a freshly pulled pint of ‘Newky’ Brown. Produced with consummate skill by Lindisfarne’s Ray Laidlaw and with commentary jointly provided by Emmerdale’s Charlie Hardwick and Eric Robson they segue between the stunning visual landscapes of the Northumberland region with musical and thespian contributions (apart from those already credited) from Alun Armstrong and a particularly nice rendition of “Still I Love Him” performed by current Emmerdale favourite Chelsea Halfpenny.

For any Newcastle football supporters there’s a roaring version of “Blaydon Races” courtesy of Whatley, Healy & Nail (worth purchasing the DVD on its own merits) and Sting joined by Nail on a striking duet of “The Waters Of Tyne”. My one reservation…and it’s only a minor one…is that Joe McElderry performs the glorious “Big River” where personally I think it should have been handed to the more mature Nail or Mitchell to give it the gravitas it really deserves. There’s plenty here for the ‘folk’ music enthusiast and, while you’re at it 70% of the profits go towards some very deserving charities. Mawson & Wareham have provided us with some great DVDs in recent years and this one certainly wears its heart on its sleeve. Highly recommended!

75% of the profits from this DVD will be donated to the following Not for Profit company and Charities: the Northumbria Anthology, the Sunday for Sammy, the Bobby Robson Foundation and the Rainforest Foundation.

Up in the North East we’re very proud of our musical heritage so I’m absolutely sure that this will be a DVD you’ll play again and again.’ Kevin Whately.

TIM EDEY & BRENDAN POWER – Wriggle And Writhe (Gnatbite Records GB 010)

For those that have not seen them before, Tim and Brendan are two of the nicest blokes on the UK ‘folk’ circuit. They are also without doubt (or at the very least probably) the finest collaborators of reed based instruments anywhere on the planet as can be attested by artists the calibre of Sting, Kate Bush, Capercaillie and Mary Black. I have been a fan of the harmonica since I first heard Larry Adler but my allegiance transferred to Brendan when I saw him performing at the opening ceremony of the 1990 Commonwealth Games. Integrating his extensive knowledge of blues with Celtic melodies this engaging New Zealander (originally from Kenya but now based in Kent) along with the accordion wielding Edey manage to breathe expression into every note of their performance. From the opening track “Celtic Thunder/Kent To Kintail” the energy and exuberance of the duo sweep the listener along on a whirlwind tour of all that’s best about this music that we, the ‘folk’ community selfishly claim as our own. If on the other hand you’re looking for something a little more melancholy check out the arrangement of “The Maids Of Mitchelstown/The Morning Star” or their choice of songs…and yes…I didn’t know they sang either. I’ve had the pleasure of playing in session with both these guys and let me tell you the experience left me (and everyone who was there) truly invigorated therefore I have no reservation in suggesting you purchase a copy of this astonishing tour de force at the earliest opportunity and, why not impress your mates by playing them a couple of tracks to show them instrumental wizardry of the highest order.

With their unique approach to the Scottish tradition, Peatbog Faeries play to audiences all over the world. This album takes them in a new direction and could be long time producer Calum McLean’s finest hour.  As McLean said himself ‘this album has been the best musical experience of my life’.  New members have provided fresh impetus to the direction and creativity of the band:

Fiddle player Peter Tickell brings a youthful enthusiasm.  He has developed experimental techniques in the use of fiddle effects while remaining rooted in his tradition.  Peter currently also plays in Sting’s band. Drummer Stu Haikney brings a vast store of experience to the band and incorporates sampling into his live playing.

The band prioritised live takes as the starting point for the album bringing the sound closer to the thrill of their “on stage” performances.  The band began the process, in their studio, in Orbost, Skye before doing final takes in the studios of Cumbernauld College. The band loved working with the students there and “handpicked” four of them to take part in the engineering process under the beady eye of Calum Mclean.
