Wynford Jones & Geoff Cripps, of seminal Welsh band The Chartists , today announce some new gig dates, two of which are special in that they commemorate the end of the year-long Miner’s Strike of forty years ago on 5th March 1985.
Wynford & Geoff began their duo act just a year ago, and in 2024 released two albums on the Steam Pie label: Lauford Cripps Live at BGFM Nantyglo and The Chartists – Cause for Complaint Remastered and Expanded, the latter being fueled by their response to the strike of 40 years ago.
Now the duo is very pleased to be performing some of these songs at a special event to be held in the pit-head baths of Wales’s national mining museum – Big Pit Blaenafon on St.David’s Day 1st March. (https://museum.wales/bigpit/whatson/12522/Was-It-Worth-It-Commemorating-the-end-of-the-1984-85-Miners-Strike/ ) Just a fortnight later they will be joined by poet and playwright Patrick Jones at another special daylong event to mark the strike at The Welfare, Ystradgynlais on Saturday 15th March (https://thewelfare.co.uk/Shows/performance-as-protest-a-double-bill/ )
Other dates for the duo include their return to the Forest Folk Club, at the Sloop Inn, Sling, Coleford (Sunday 16th March – https://forestfolkclub.com/events-in-2025/ ) and a first appearance at Brecon’s iconic Theatr Brycheiniog on Thursday 17th April (https://www.brycheiniog.co.uk/en/whats-on )
Martyn Joseph, Wales’ premier singer-songwriter said ““I can’t recall a moment in my lifetime when we needed the siren call of protest more than now,” he said. “We need the spirit of these songs…to remind ourselves of who we truly are.”
