Heisk, the joyful self-titled album from the Scottish trad group, is set for release on Friday, 20 August. The debut record, which blends traditional influences with funk and pop, is a celebration of female empowerment, having been created, produced and released by women.

The six-piece group banded together after noticing a lack of female representation in trad music. This inspired them to create the 10-track album with a range of other female creatives.

The energetic band were brought together via Glasgow’s thriving music scene and the six members come from all corners of Scotland.

The funky folk band is made up of Becca Skeoch on electro harp, Catriona Hawksworth on keys, Lauren Macdonald on kit, Megan MacDonald on accordion, Rosie Munro on fiddle and Sally Simpson on fiddle.

Becca Skeoch said: “After a number of years of writing and performing together, we felt it was time to record our debut album that showcased our festival party vibe and celebrated the awesome women working in the creative industries.

“Created, performed and engineered by women, the album highlights the talents of under-represented professionals in the creative industries. We are proud to have collaborated on our debut release with a female producer, photographer, videographer, mixing engineer, mastering engineer, manager and promoter. This is girl power at its best.”

The toe-tapping record is lively and made for dancing, with influences from disco and electronic music. The first single Ailsa is a warm, dreamy track that will be released on Friday, 13th August.

Disco is a stand-out track, with strong influences from the funky dance beats of the 70s while the energetic Kayak is guaranteed to get festival go-ers on their feet. Elsewhere on the record, tracks like Charlie and Faces show off a more mellow and emotive sound.

Heisk recorded the album at GloWorm Studios in October 2020 after spending the last two years writing the funky, upbeat record. Mixed by Grace Banks and mastered by Katie Tavini, all tracks on the album are arranged by Heisk.

Heisk will be available to buy on CD and stream and download on all digital platforms, on Friday 20 August.
