Fisherman’s Friends – film and soundtrack album release

Fisherman's Friends

Fisherman’s Friends: One and All will be in UK cinemas on 19 August 2022 with the eagerly awaited soundtrack album released simultaneously. The music is a mixture of floor fillers from the 18th century and a couple of rogue ones from the 20th & 21st thrown in for good measure, this album is everything you want it to be with stirring songs from the sea, often poignant but mostly foot-stomping, rip-roaring fun! The hugely talented singer-songwriter Imelda May is making her film debut as the character Aubrey Flynn while also joining the band on three songs.

James Purefoy reprises the role of Jim, with other returning cast members including Maggie Steed, Dave Johns, Sam Swainsbury, Jade Anouka and David Hayman. New faces in Port Isaac include Richard Harrington as the new band member Morgan, Ramon Tikaram, Joshua McGuire and Irish singer-songwriter Imelda May, in her debut acting role.

Fisherman’s Friends: One and All re-joins the band a year after the unexpected success of their debut album as charted in the first film. It’s been a whirlwind 12 months and the demands of the music industry have taken their toll. Where once they hauled nets, they’re now expected to land hits and the notorious ‘second album syndrome’, plus the pressures, pitfalls and temptations of their newfound fame, are all starting to bite hard. Then there’s the small matter of their impending performance on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, the most famous music festival in the world.

No pressure, then…

Once again, the story has been inspired by the Fisherman’s Friends, the real-life band of fishermen, shopkeepers, potters and builders who got together more than 30 years ago to sing sea shanties on the Platt in their native Port Isaac. A chance encounter saw them sign to Island Records and become the first traditional folk act to land a UK top ten album.

“Without sounding too biblical about it there have been two comings of The Fisherman’s Friend”, says the band’s luxuriantly moustachioed founder Jon Cleave. “First when we got discovered and got the recording contract and all that, and that gradually over the years faded, then when the movie came out and we got a taste of it all over again.”

“But through all that excitement we’ve managed to keep hold of ourselves and realise we’re popular because we are what we are, not because of anything we might think we are afterwards.”

Since crashing into the top 10 in 2010, The Fisherman’s Friends have gone on to sing at HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, play Glastonbury and were honoured with the Good Tradition Award at the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. They’ve also been the subject of an ITV documentary, released hit albums and last year saw the premiere of Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical in the Hall For Cornwall which is about to tour the country from September this year, and then to Canada for two months!
