The Official Folk Album Chart – August 2024

The Official Folk Album Chart

On Tuesday 3 September the Official Charts Company in partnership with English Folk Expo revealed the Top 40 best-selling and most streamed folk albums released in the August reporting period in the UK by UK and Irish artists. The chart was first announced to the public on Tuesday 3 September at 7pm GMT as part of the Official Folk Albums Chart Show presented by Folk on Foot via their YouTube channel.

There are 2 new releases in the August chart!

New at No. 19 is Silver Horizon (Captain Records) by Sam Carter. Featuring 11 hook-driven indie folk songs in an absorbing sound world and with a stellar cast of musicians, including Stuart McCallum, Ben Nicholls and Rowan Rheingans, Carter’s fifth record represents a marked shift in style from his previous work. “I’m still dealing with themes of love, loss, and change that have been a part of my earlier work,” explains Carter, “but at the moment, sketching events in an impressionistic way instead of documenting them in detail gives the songs more room to breathe.”

Our second and final new entry in this month’s chart is Altan’s Donegal  (Compass) at No. 34. Irish-language songs and dynamic twin-fiddling, the hallmarks of Altan’s sound, frame the band’s newest album. Paying homage to Donegal’s rich musical heritage, breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture, the allure of the music transports listeners to a bygone time in rural Ireland while simultaneously forging a connection between the past and modern times.

Elsewhere, Myles Smith’s You Promised Me A Lifetime (RCA) remains at the No.1 spot and a notable number of albums move up positions, no doubt as a result of strong festival performances across the summer. These include The Pendulum Swing (Cooking Vinyl) by Katherine Priddy (moving 17>7), Tapir! (21>14) with The Pilgrim, Their God and The King Of My Decrepit Mountain (Heavenly) and Cara Dillon (35>26) with Coming Home (Charcoal).
