Official Folk Albums chart – September 2024

The Official Folk Album Chart

On Tuesday 1 October the Official Charts Company, in partnership with English Folk Expo, revealed the Top 40 best-selling and most streamed folk albums released in the September reporting period in the UK by UK and Irish artists. The chart is first announced to the public on Tuesday 1 October at 7pm GMT as part of the Official Folk Albums Chart Show presented by Folk on Foot via their YouTube channel.

Once again the extraordinary success of Myles Smith’s debut You Promised Me A Lifetime (RCA) continues, with the EP reaching No. 1 for the fourth non-consecutive month. Meanwhile the title track is currently sitting at No. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 and interest is building worldwide.

As the downtime of summer seeps into September, artists have held back on releases, meaning there are only two new entries in this month’s chart:

Coming in at No. 26 is In The Dark We Grow (Sungazing) by well-respected duo of Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage. At The Barrier kicks off its review of the album with the accolade, “Sanders & Savage. No longer just one of our best vocal duos, are they now our best?” winding up with “A glorious record with, potentially, the best vocal performance of the year”.

After fifty years of blurring the borders of folk and rock, Gryphon bring their eclectic smorgasbord of acoustic and electric instruments to double album, Gryphon Live: A Sonic Tonic (Talking Elephant), which arrives at No. 34. Recorded during their 2023 UK tour and released in set list order, Folking.com says, “the mix is just right: a few laughs, not too many of the serious pieces which dominated fifty years ago and, overall, a display of musical skill and dexterity that few bands can match”.
