On Tuesday 6 August the Official Charts Company in partnership with English Folk Expo revealed the Top 40 best-selling and most streamed folk albums released in the July reporting period in the UK by UK and Irish artists. The chart is first announced to the public on Tuesday 6 August at 7pm GMT as part of the Official Folk Albums Chart Show presented by Folk on Foot via their YouTube channel.
There are 3 new releases in the July chart!
New at No. 2 is Beauty In Your Wake (R’COUP’D) by long-established alt-folk trio Fink. Fin Greenall’s eighth studio album under the genre-hopping moniker sees him working with Grammy Award-winning engineer and mixer Sam Okell and reuniting with the reformed, classic Fink line-up who featured on the band’s first breakthrough album.
Coming in at No. 7 is Live From Dublin (B—Unique Records) by rising Irish indie-folk band Kingfishr. Speaking of the album that was recorded earlier this year at 3Olympia Theatre, the trio said, “The 3Olympia Theatre was the venue we targeted from day one. It’s iconic in Ireland and for any Irish artist it’s the dream. Whether it took us 2 years or 20, we wanted to headline it and when that opportunity arose in little over a year it was hard to believe.”
Naomi Bedford & Paul Simmonds’ fourth collaborative album Strange News Has Come To Town (Dusty Willow) is at No. 16. Commenced the week before lockdown and beset by pandemic, financial collapse and health issues, on this record personal issues are to the fore, as Louder Than War echoed in their review: “the importance of roots music of the type on display here, cannot be overestimated. This is a definitively human album.”
