Michell Pfeiffer & Kulesh announce their first trio album

Michell,Pfeiffer & KuleshThree unique female voices from three different cultures rise in sublime harmony, telling powerful stories that have moved people across borders, languages and times. Exquisite, yet far from purely decorative, this rich, multilingual record evokes images of flowers placed in rifle barrels; it tells stories of women who certainly aren’t blushing roses to be picked or discarded at will. Featuring a strong theme of female empowerment and a heartfelt plea for peace, Flowers is truly an album for our times, yet is also rooted in timeless tradition.

Produced, mixed and mastered by Jason Emberton, the album features the impressive instrumental talents of Jason Emberton (drums, strings, keyboards), Katrina Davies (violin), Phil Beer (violin on ‘The Cossack’s Bride’), Jonny Dyer (guitar on ‘May Colven’) and Marina Osman (piano on ‘Those Were the Days’).

Odette Michell, Karen Pfeiffer and Daria Kulesh themselves contribute not only their voices and stunning arrangements but also their multi-instrumental skills; including bouzouki, guitar, accordion, bodhran, shruti box, percussion and woodwind (Irish flute and recorders).

The album will be launched on Sunday 9th June 2024 at The Riverhouse Barn Arts Centre in Walton-on-Thames, with a tour of UK venues and festivals to follow. The official music video accompanying the title track and lead single Flowers will be released on the same day

Michell, Pfeiffer & Kulesh are an all-female close harmony folk trio that brings together the exciting talents and exquisite voices of award-winning singers and songwriters Odette Michell, Karen Pfeiffer and Daria Kulesh.

Their stunning three-part vocal harmonies bring to life spellbinding folk tales, expertly woven together with a vibrant international twist – a project that would never transpired had it not been for the lockdowns, when three of the busiest female performers on the folk scene found themselves somewhat less occupied than before. Introducing Stage winners at The Great British Folk Festival 2023 by public vote, they wow their audiences with a deeply moving, exciting and unique live show. Theirs is a unique cross-cultural, multi-lingual, multi-instrumental collaboration, turning familiar folk tunes into something fresh and powerful.

Odette Michell (England) is an award-winning British folk singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who’s sound is deeply rooted in the English folk tradition. Odette plays guitar, bouzouki and accordion and has played alongside Show of Hands and Seth Lakeman, as well as opening for the likes of Martin Carthy and Phil Beer. Her 2019 debut album ‘The Wildest Rose’ was met with critical acclaim, making several of the end of year best-of lists. Odette has since appeared at Celtic Connections, has headlined three solo UK tours and was winner of the ‘Female Artist of The Year’ at the 2019 FATEA Awards.

Karen Pfeiffer (Germany) burst onto the British folk scene as one half of the Anglo-German duo Paul Walker & Karen Pfeiffer. Having extensively toured their shows in the UK and around the world, Karen is wooing audiences not only with her natural theatricality and life affirming playful energy, but also with her “seriously impressive, mezzo-soprano voice: one that would not be out of place on the opera stage.” (The Living Tradition). The finishing touches to have audiences melt in her hands are her oatcake-induced Swabian-Staffordshire accent and her legendary German humour.

Daria Kulesh (Russia) has been described by Mike Harding as “one of the finest voices and one of the most intriguing and interesting songwriters on the present folk scene”. Mixing her Eastern roots with Western folk influences, she creates an original and exciting sound, full of passion and magic. Born in Russia but based in the UK for the last 15 years, she fearlessly explores her heritage and turbulent family history in Ingushetia (North Caucasus) with songs that “aren’t just sung but lived”. She has toured extensively and has three award-winning solo albums to her name.
