Described as a ‘master musician’ (Blues Matters), Amit Dattani, a distinctive voice in the folk scene releases his much anticipated second album,Wrong Kind Of One in September 2025, alongside a cluster of live dates.
When acclaimed finger-style guitarist and songwriter Amit was diagnosed with a degenerative nerve condition in 2018, the prognosis was devastating: just two more years of playing guitar before his hands would no longer cooperate. For a musician whose artistry was deeply rooted in the strings beneath his fingertips, it felt like an ending. But Wrong Kind Of One is proof that some stories don’t end the way they’re expected to.
The follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut Santiago – hailed as “amongst the year’s finest debut albums” (KLOF) – this new record is more than just music. It’s a testament to perseverance, adaptation, and the joy of creativity. Finding hope in a custom-built guitar, a shift in playing style, and the support of those around him, Amit forged a way forward, refusing to let his condition define him.
At its core, Wrong Kind Of One is an album about resilience – not just in the face of physical challenges, but in navigating the complexities of the world around us. Through its songs, Amit explores the weight of mental health struggles, the search for hope in uncertain times, and the fight against injustice, all while weaving in deeply personal reflections on family and belonging.
Recorded live in straight takes, Wrong Kind Of One captures the playful musical chemistry between Amit’s intricate fingerpicked guitar and the dynamic, nuanced drumming of Steph Sanders. The result is an album that feels immediate, organic, and deeply human—an unfiltered conversation between two musicians who push, challenge, and inspire each other.
Title track ‘Wrong Kind Of One’ is a song about the terrible journeys communities have had to make, escaping violence, hardship, war and destruction, and how those communities are often dehumanised, left aside and mistreated.
Amit covers his favourite Dylan song ‘One Too Many Mornings’ and closes the album with a raw and unadorned instrumental version of the gospel hymn ‘Just a Closer Walk With Thee’
Folk, blues and Americana singer-songwriter Amit Dattani has garnered attention from the likes of BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 Music, Americana UK and fRoots, with his nimble fingerpicking and striking lyrical originality. Named in ‘Best Gigs of 2023’ by Tradfolk, Amit’s raconteur spirit and superb musicianship has garnered a strong reputation on the live circuit, with over twenty years performing across the UK and Europe under his belt.
His wry lyrics, mellifluous guitar and warm vocals come to the fore with his most recent release, Santiago – a collection of stripped back songs with just guitar and voice. Amit has shared the stage with the likes of Charlie Parr, John Smith, Blind Boy Paxton, Willy Vlautin and Kathryn Williams.
