Underwater Sky is the debut album release from Kyson Point (David and Kelly Booth). The beautiful watercolour by Claudia Myatt that graces this album depicts a view from the banks of the river Deben in Woodbridge towards Kyson Point. Gazing out across the mercurial waters from here on any given day and season is an experience that never fails to mesmerise. There is an intimacy that can be felt here with the river and whilst the landscape has changed little since the first notable visitors in Anglo Saxon times, the ever changing spectacle always provides the perfect canvas upon which to paint thoughts, ideas and songs.
Not every song on the album was penned here, far from it, but to David and Kelly this place represents every hill, lake, forest, firth & storm that they have connected with and reminds them what it feels like to truly be human. Building and reinforcing connections with the natural world, with each other and with their selves – these are the themes that run deeply and wind their way surely through this album, much like the path of the river itself.
So in a time when Artificial Intelligence creeps into every aspect of life, including songwriting and music production, why go to so much effort to create this album? Why agonise over words, meanings, chords, melodies, recording techniques, instruments, artwork, authenticity or the honesty of a vocal performance? Perhaps they are stuck in the past – AI is the future so are they modern musical dinosaurs approaching the same fate as Triceratops and Diplodocus? Or perhaps they are two deeply creative humans for whom music is – aside from their loved ones of course – everything. It is their living and their fun, what brought them together and what sustains them. To David and Kelly music is felt, literally. Vibrations from David’s handmade acoustic guitar, connecting with rib cage; waves of tones & overtones flooding from the upright piano in their living room, washing over ecstatic ears. Putting pen or pencil to paper as if their sanity depends upon it. That’s how they live & how they choose to create.
Underwater Sky features several guest musicians including Giovanni Crescenzi – bass guitar, Sophie Sirota – viola, violin, Scott Neubert – pedal steel, Jonathan Evans – cello and on backing vocals Lucy Hart, Jon Hart and Elvie Berry. All songs were written and produced by Kelly & David Booth. Recorded & mixed by David at The Recording Booth, Suffolk and Mastered by Joe Vegna in Stockholm, Sweden. Kyson Point is UK husband and wife duo Kelly and David Booth. Both criticallyacclaimed artists in their own right, they now bring their individual song-writing and performance skills together in one heart-felt place.
Built on a foundation of David’s evocative acoustic guitar and Kelly’s lyrical piano, the couple craft contemporary folk music inspired by stories and moods found all around us in the natural world alongside timeless reflections on what it is to be human. Their writing is gently shaped by the sounds of classic Laurel Canyon, traditional folk songs, the wide open Suffolk skies and waters where they live and the rugged Pennine hills of David’s upbringing.
The name Kyson Point (taken from a beautiful location on the River Deben in Suffolk) is new, but Kelly and David’s music has been intertwined for some time. The couple both released solo albums in 2023 but Kelly’s Wave Machine (under the name Kelly Bayfield) and David’s All My Days were very much joint efforts in all respects. Underwater Sky is Kyson Point’s first official album as a duo. From Folk East to Maverick festivals in the UK, across to Sweden’s Live At Heart and Folk At Heart, along with intimate sold out shows in their home county, Kyson Point have now fine-tuned their live set to strike the perfect balance between thoughtful ballads and uplifting foot-stomping choruses.
