Yvonne Lyon’s new album Songs For Christmas is an outstanding and engaging collection to herald the festive season. Featuring five original Christmas songs and seven reworked traditional carols, her unique ability to constantly evolve as an artist is evident throughout as she embraces several different genres to weave an elegant and memorable sonic tapestry.
From the anthemic chorus of ‘Peace On Earth’ to the haunting ethereal beauty of ‘O Holy Night’, Yvonne is unafraid to embrace opposite ends of the dynamic spectrum. Her Celtic folk influences are also evident on the poignant lament of ‘If I Can’t Be Home For Christmas’, the foot stomping celebration of ‘Joy To The World’ and the endearing ‘Away In A Manger’.
Among Yvonne’s guest contributors are violinist Seonaid Aitken and whistle player Scott Wood (Skerryvore) who both significantly enrich and energise the album with effortless and instinctive flair.
Included in the collection is Yvonne’s critically acclaimed gem, I Believe In Christmas in which she voices a quiet protest challenging our consumerism with humour and subtlety. A song with charm like no other, it drew considerable praise from Michael Ball on BBC Radio 2:
“I love her, absolutely love her… great song beautifully performed”
Songs For Christmas will compel and console throughout this December and beyond. It’s a timeless and positive gift, wrapped up with loving care and no little extravagance.
Yvonne is among the UK’s brightest and best singer/songwriters. Having supported Eddi Reader throughout the UK, performed with Beth Nielsen Chapman and co-written with Boo Hewerdine, she continues to establish herself as an artist of considerable significance.
