JON BICKLEY AND THE INVISIBLE FOLK CLUB BAND – Under The Same Sky (Invisible Folk CD001)

Under The Same SkyMost of the music on Under The Same Sky has been written for a film project for The Higgins Museum. Jon Bickley is known as a lot of things – songwriter, folksinger, poet – but he and the Invisible Folk Club podcast producer Steve Yarwood, formed a partnership with the Bedford museum to make a film shown as part of their ‘Under The Same Sky’ exhibition.

The theme of the exhibition is countryside and climate in the region around the museum. Bickley says: “The music and the film do not comment on the landscape but abandon themselves to it, getting lost in its beauty and its mystery.”

All the musicians that feature on Under The Same Sky also live locally in the Bedford area. Diana Stone is on violin, Russel Eyre on mandolin, concertina and slide guitar, Bob Templeman plays guitar and Annette Burrows provides beautiful harmony vocals.

The water heard on ‘I Can Hear Voices’ really pops for attention, think it’s heavy rainfall, and I love to hear ‘found sound’ on a recording. It really pings the imagination, and the idea of being outside in nature while I’m stuck indoors is a win.  My favourite tracks were ‘Beside Me’, a lovely song with harmonies from Burrows, and ‘Winter’.

A lost track ‘Tree Dreaming’ was missed off the album due to covid cutting short the recording session, but you can still enjoy it in poem form on the CD inside cover.
