The Janice Long Bursary

Long-running festival announces opening of bursary award in honour of renowned broadcaster.
Hello You! supports new and emerging musicians.
Deadline for applications is Wednesday 31 July 2024.

Moseley Folk and Arts Festival has announced the opening of Hello You! 2024 – the annual bursary scheme in honour of renowned broadcaster, and friend, Janice Long.

Open to unsigned artists in the Folk, Rock, Indie, Psychedelic and Alternative genres, who are based in England or Wales, 2024’s scheme is now open. The deadline for applications is Wednesday 31 July 2024.

Each year, one act will receive a valued career-enhancing boost with professional recording studio time, an opening slot on Moseley Folk’s Janice Long Stage, followed by a higher profile appearance 12 months later, plus a professional photo-shoot and biography.

Hello You! was set up in 2022 in the wake of Janice’s tragic passing. The first recipient was Liverpool-based multi-instrumentalist Louie Miles, who is currently working on his debut album; 2023’s winner was Norwich country rock band Brown Horse, who’ve just released their debut long-player Reservoir (Loose Music), which was described as “stunning” by Uncut.

Born in 1955, in Liverpool, Janice Long’s broadcasting career stretched across five decades. A huge supporter of new and emerging talent, she was the first woman to gain a daily music show on BBC Radio 1, going on to host shows across BBC Radio 2, BBC 6Music, BBC Wales, Greatest Hits Radio, XFM and BBCWM – where she embraced Birmingham life. A true pioneer, she was also the first regular female presenter on BBC One’s weekly TV chart show, Top Of The Pops.

A vocal fan of Birmingham’s Moseley Folk and Arts Festival, Janice was the festival’s regular compare from the outset. Enthusiastically introducing artists to the stage, while also catching up with them behind the scenes, she insisted on attending the event every year until her sudden death in December 2021.
