Formed in late 2012 from the ashes of Cheshire based renowned Celtic punk folk band Tower Struck Down and Staffordshire acoustic folk-punk band, Jugopunch, Headsticks have developed their own brand of what they themselves describe as ‘revolutionary punk roots rock’n’roll’. Through constant gigging, touring, recording and general hard graft Headsticks have seen their profile continually rise.
Their latest album, Kept In The Dark, demonstrates their superb eclectic abilities. Headsticks are a potent mix capable of the controlled madness of Jello Biafra-like vocals one minute and a Cramps-tinged frenetic riff the next. They offera potent slice of mutant punk reggae, adding a smidgen of political pop-punk. Headsticks never rest on their laurels or go through the motions. The mutant-skank of the agit-pop protest punk of ‘Mr I’m Alright Jack’, despite its serious subject matter, is like the Membranes on decent drugs. And from the 60s style folk-rock of ‘It’s A Matter Of Time’, the hard rock riffarama of ‘Smoke And Mirrors’ and the anarchy punk a la Zounds/The Mob of ‘What If They’re Right?’ they encompass elements of 80s angry protest.
A host of support slots with bands as varied as The Wildhearts, Lindisfarne, Spear Of Destiny, Buzzcocks and Ferocious Dog amongst many others have seen their music cross genre barriers which have been received with the same enthusiasm and fervour as their live shows.
Their previous two albums, and two EPs and live album, have all received glowing reviews across the board and are now joined by their new CD and double vinyl album. Kept In The Dark is their first release on STP Records, the much respected punk (and beyond) label and also the first studio release since signing a publishing deal with Wipe Out Music.
Headsticks continues its crusade to tell it like it is and was delighted to be one of just a handful of bands asked to play two sets at 2018’s Rebellion Punk Rock Festival, playing full electric and acoustic sets to fantastic reception! This year they return for their fourth consecutive appearance there, again playing two sets, and with their Bearded Theory debut ahead of them this summer. With numerous other festival appearances already confirmed, the band is determined to ensure the continuation of its profile and popularity.
