HAV is singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Alex Ross, multi-instrumentalist /producer/ambient sound guru Jonathan Bidgood, and bass player Ian ‘Dodge’ Paterson.
The trio met more than 20 years ago and have been taking time out from other projects to meet up, drink whisky and play music together ever since. Individually, the members of HAV have been championed by BBC1 Introducing, BBC6, BBC Radio 2, & BBC Radio 4. They’ve shared stages with the likes of John Grant, Nitin Sawhney, YVA and The Comedy Store Players.
HAV is the Danish word for sea. Haar is the meteorological phenomenon of sea fret; a coastal fog that appears as cold air from the North Sea meets warmer air at the edge of land.
About the album, Haar
Haar is the Scots name for sea fret, the dank fog which forms on the east coast of Scotland where cold air from the North sea hits the warmer air on land. Haar is an album about what is shrouded when the fog rolls in, and what is revealed when it rolls out. HAV follow up their warmly received debut album Inver with a collection of pieces, created over the course of the last three years, which chart their journeys into fatherhood, marriage and emigration. Alex, Dodge and Jon are still the same, and yet so much has changed.
Early recording sessions in Tuscany and on Jon’s off-grid olive farm in rural Catalonia shaped the sound of the record; the natural world is as much a part of the compositions as the melodies and lyrics. The dense textures and rich sonic landscape of the album draw the listener into the Haar and emerge into a world that seems fragile and damaged, and yet one where all things are made new. It is a reflection of the members of HAV’s struggles with the responsibilities and challenges of family life, with its joys (and losses) and the renewed exploration of ideas of place, purpose, and what your “roots” really mean.
Haar features contributions from two incredible women; MG ALBA Scots Singer of the Year Iona Fyfe and BBC Glastonbury Emerging winner and critically acclaimed singer Bridie Jackson (formerly of Bridie Jackson and the Arbour). Key influences for the record include Olafur Arnalds, Jon Hopkins, Gjermund Larsen and Massive Attack. A rich brew of field recording, sound manipulation, tape looping, traditional Scottish/Scandinavian folk and neo-classical composition, Haar is a single complete work in six parts.
