What an absolutely fabulous festival set on the outskirts of the ancient town of Wickham in the beautiful county of Hampshire. Sunshine all the way as still in the third heatwave of 2026. Those of us from Folking Towers knew we were in for a wonderful first day of good music, fun and sunscreen!!
After disembarking the Folkmobile, we were surprised at how many people had come for the first day which was lovely to see. Lots of interesting trader stalls including Miranda Sykes’ Souly Sea Glass stall, Hobgoblin Music, Clothes stalls, camping gear, you name it. The food areas were full of everything for the Vegan, Vegetarian and meat eater, plus delicious treats like Waffles, Ice Cream and everything inbetween. India, Korean, Fish and Chips plus festival favourite Leon who travels to most UK festivals and more.
The Main Stage was the only stage operating for Thursday and kicking off the proceedings was regular Big Top compere Alistair Russell who gave us 40 minutes of his catalogue and as a one time member of the Battlefield Band, had plenty to deliver from. Alistair is a very knowledgeable member of the music world so an excellent choice for the Big Top Compere.
I enjoyed a session with the Uke Jam which took place at the Twisted Tearooms marquee, ukes on the café tables and jam books to join in. Very well organised and was very well supported by lots of ‘ukers’ like me! Tea, cake and ukuleles was a very pleasant hour in the sun with like minded enthusiasts! New friends made already! They are gathering again on Friday.
Hannah Sanders and Ben Savage were just amazing! An absolute delight. Hannah and Ben certainly are ones to make sure you don’t miss when on tour. Captivating songs of seasons, mystical tales and more. Using a very sensitive microphone between them, you could hear every word. They included songs from their current album – their fifth – entitled The Strangers Share the audience hung on to their every word.
Pronghorn next. After a nine year gap, they returned to Wickham and just wowed the rammed Main Stage. Full of energy the band were led by Tony Viagra and strutted out pun, country and rockabilly with such force!! Pronghorn have been around over 30 years and are known in Europe playing in Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Cherbourg. Banjo at its best!
Headliners The Red Hot Chilli Pipers saw out the first evening. Bag Pipes, cover songs and the belting Scottish attitude brought the first evening on the Main Stage to a raucous close. The crowd joined in with gusto.
Well done Wickham. Day One didn’t disappoint!!
