Since the release of his most recent album in January 2020, From Hull And Halifax And Hell…, a live album of original and traditional Northern English folk song recorded on the Faroe Islands, Johnny Campbell now sets his sights on a new project closer to home but equally as audacious.
Celebrating the rich and diverse traditions of Northern English folk song by field recording a series of songs on each Northern English county top or summit area. A Yorkshire song on Yorkshire’s highest, Cumbria on Cumbria’s highest…and so on…
Taking the project further, Campbell not only field records the audio but will video, vlog, blog and document the song, but also the journey to each point, detailing in depth the landscape and history of the song.
Not content with taking such an alternative way to recording music, this is also a forward-thinking project where you can become a direct and active supporter on Campbell’s Patreon page where you can see the album progress and develop as the project evolves.
“These landscapes inspire our songs past and present, traditional or contemporary. They are part of our bone, sinew and every fibre in our body as Northerners.
If it wasn’t for these hills that fed the water to our mills, factories, canals and to the shipyards, the Industrial Revolution would not have happened here. Thus creating our working-class identity, our culture and part of our trade union movement. The Tyneside music Hall songs, Border ballads inspiring and inspired by Scottish melody and dialect to bawdy Lancastrian work songs, we have a diverse culture to celebrate.
From ancient kingdoms, Celtic lands and forgotten tongues, these landscapes are part of who we are.”
