JILL JACKSON – Yours Aye (JJR002CD)

Yours AyeJill Jackson releases Yours Aye on May 6th. Jackson has a twenty year career in the music industry – UK singles charts, performing on Top of the Pops, playing the likes of T in the Park and Glastonbury etc. Yours Aye is her sixth solo record. Her previous album, 2018’s Are We There Yet, reached No 3 in the iTunes UK Country Charts and its title track is one of the most memorable tracks I’ve heard over the past five years, capturing that perfect balance between lyrical content, melody and arrangement. It was, then, with great anticipation that I played the new album.

And it’s a good ‘un.

There are eleven tracks, all written by Jackson, none that I skipped over, all in that genre that you’d class as country/Americana if it weren’t for an equally strong sense of her Glaswegian background. The album is produced by Boo Hewerdine and has a melange of classy musicians in support. But above all, it has Jackson’s glorious vocal infusing the whole album.

There don’t seem to be any promo videos of the new album – which means there’s chance to look at an early acoustic play of ‘Standing Still’, Jackson’s vocal and acoustic guitar alone. There are singers who can make the emotions rise in your heart and you only have to listen to this minimalist take to hear how Jackson is one of them.

Other highlights include the title track, the opener ‘Hurt’, the bouncing ‘Don’t Let the Fire Burn Out’ and ‘Sweeter Than Honey’, the catchy ‘Baby Chicken’, and the yearning ‘All I’ve Ever Known’. Actually, the whole album.

Jackson describes the album as, “Each song I write is personal, it’s based on my own life and experiences. People connect with that…. Conveying raw emotion was critical to Yours Aye and I hope it resonates with people.”

The album is launched at the Cottiers Theatre in Glasgow on May 19th and Jackson has other gigs coming up in Stirling in June and Perth in July.
