Donations roll in to help secure FolkEast

FOLKEAST CROWDFUNDER TOPS £21K

What a difference a day (or so) makes. Just five days after making the sadly inevitable decision to postpone England’s most easterly folk festival this August, FolkEast organisers have been overwhelmed with donations to their crowdfunding campaign.

In just seven years FolkEast – held in the glorious Suffolk grounds of Glemham Hall – has built a distinct character and become one of the best-loved festivals on the UK circuit.

Husband and wife John and Becky Marshall-Potter took the difficult decision to postpone this key event on the UK festival calendar last weekend, with this announcement.

Said John: “There was no way it could have gone ahead with all the uncertainty surround Covid-19. You couldn’t ask people to stand two metres apart at the bar or not dance too close to each other at the ceilidh. Postponing it is hugely disappointing for everyone involved but is the only responsible thing to do.”

Rescheduled for August 20-22, 2021 the festival has confirmed that the majority of this year’s exceptional line-up will be on board next year including hugely popular patrons The Young’uns (left), Afro Celt Sound System, Kris Drever and Elephant Sessions.

Launching a crowdfunder to help secure the future of the festival, Becky said: “Being a totally independent festival comes with its own challenges and the crisis we are all facing at the moment has shown us how precious it is to have the freedom to join together. As festival organisers it’s a privilege to make this happen and we’re determined that FolkEast will be around for many years to come.”

The “Secure FolkEast in 2021 and beyond” crowdfunding campaign broke its initial target of £18k in less than four days; it is currently standing at over £21k and will remain open until June 7. Says Becky: “We can’t believe it and want to thank everyone for their generosity and incredible support. Not only will it help secure the festival’s future but in turn it means we can provide support to the local small business, food and drink providers, crafts and heritage organisations and artists, technicians and crew who work with us.”

The rewards on offer to contributors range from a FolkEast pin badge to the £1000 FolkEast Passport which gives the purchaser a ‘lifetime membership’ of the event with a pair of tickets to every future FolkEast festival .

“In a world where there are hundreds of festivals, FolkEast prospers by doing something unique and doing it brilliantly” – RnR Magazine

Tickets bought for 2020 will automatically transfer to 2021. Says Becky: “We rely heavily on advance ticket revenue – by retaining your ticket you’ll be directly supporting the 2021 event – and your first drink next year will be on us!”

Says John: “Now the decision has been taken we are firmly focused on making FolkEast 2021 even more outstanding than his year’s event was going to be. To everyone who is helping us keep on track by retaining their tickets or making a donation we would like to say a big thank you from all of us here at FolkEast HQ.”
