DAVID GRUBB – Nano (Shake’Um’Dud)

NanoDavid Grubb is a musician who doesn’t play by anybody else’s rules; a fiddle player with roots in traditional music and a composer with a taste for contemporary music and jazz. Nano, his second solo album, comprises just five tracks as originally released in digital form but there is news.

‘Intro’ is an entire overture crammed into a minute’s music – so much going on. The second track, ‘Bliss Is Ignorance’, begins with a blast of noise that will knock you back before David comes in with a sprightly fiddle tune that builds up and up to a climax before stopping suddenly and recommencing with a solo finger-picked guitar. Again this section builds up before coming to another sudden halt and starting quietly once more before heading for the finish line.

‘SOS’ begins with a jaunty figure which is over-topped by fiddle before the under-pinning is taken over by drums and another fiddle melody…and so it goes. ‘The Space In Between’ begins somewhere in the distance and then consists of deceptively simple piano until the violin appears at the edge of hearing. The closing ‘Super’ brings us back to the violin before…

Actually, it’s impossible to describe every track in detail since each one is made up of several sections which, although thematically linked together, are quite distinct. You just have to take it as it comes.

With all live work now ceased David has turned to Kickstarter to fund physical copies of Nano. If successful, there will be an extra track of solo fiddle added to the final version.
