ANDY SMYTHE – Quiet Revolution (Dreaming Element Records)

Quiet RevolutionQuiet Revolution is London based singer/songwriter Andy Smythe’s eighth studio album. It is released on March 13th and as he says it “delves into complex narratives of societal struggle and psychological drama, set against the background of a world grappling with conflict and the rise of AI”. The album is the sequel to his critically acclaimed 2024 release Poetry In Exile and features an eclectic mix of baroque-pop, folk, rock, jazz and classical music.

Twelve tracks take us through hard hitting lyrics and leave us with a far few things to think about. Andy is an amazing wordsmith, as well as being an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, producer and arranger. Andy is joined on the album with Paul Challenger on electric guitar and Beatrice Limonti on fiddle. Quiet Revolution has been a 2-year journey in the making.

This album is about questioning what is happening around us, globally and at home with the mayhem of war, politics and general unrest which seems to be the norm nowadays. A generation ago may well have been an easier life then we have now both financially and free from fake platforms like AI.

The tracks cover how in this day and age, maybe the previous generation had it easier, regrets of a 30 year relationship, road to freedom and a time for a change globally. I loved the ‘Tears Can Heal’ track which was a gentle melodic tearful ride after which ‘Love Aint Free’ lyrics talk about taxes and the robbing the poor to feed the rich by our governments and whoever else.

Although ‘Rage in Me’ is a melodic and gentle tune, the lyrics are definitely angry! Very much an antiwar song in there with ‘Why Love Is’ and ‘Sake of a Song’ is a story of how writing a song takes all your energy and takes over. ‘Because’ tells of how musicians who recognise each other in various ways and ‘Leviathan’ sings about the best songs are yet to be written. Ending with ‘Fallen Angel’ it opens with “Fear and envy, anger and jealousy”. I will leave you to listen to the album and take in what Andy Smythe is saying. We all need to try and change our world. An absolute belter of an album with a strong message. The musicians come together on the album beautifully.

Quiet Revolution is being released tomorrow and there is also an album launch (full band) at Shrewsbury House, Shooters Hill, London, SE18 – doors open at 6.30pm and the performance starts at 7.30pm Friday 13th March. Check out Andy’s website where you can buy this album and his earlier fabulous albums and see where he and the band are playing live in the coming months.
