ACOUSTIC EARTH – Travelling Man (Own Label AE01)

Andy Findon is one of those musicians who artists turn to whenever anything wind driven is required to complement their studio productions. Joined by Pete Walton on guitars and James Turner on percussion and working together as the trio Acoustic Earth the group bring together a selection of tunes (and one vocal track provided by Lorna Want on “King Of Sorrow”) relying on the strengths of melodies by the Irish harpist Carolan and Pete Walton’s own compositions. As most of Carolan’s airs are reflective set pieces this gives the album a laid back feel that I can see settling well with those who like their Celtic ‘folk’ tunes shall we say…more subtle than most. That’s not to say the recording does not have its moments, it does and this works particularly well with Walton’s own compositions “The Homecoming” and the Ocarina led “Mist Over The Water”. Vigour isn’t a word I would use to describe this album but if, like me you gain more from a reflective mood like chilling out at the end of the evening or relaxing on a long car journey with the CD player at a reasonable volume you’ll very much enjoy this album.
