Ron Sexsmith announces new album

Ron Sexsmith

Three-time Juno award winner Ron Sexsmith has revealed details about his new album, The Last Rider. Ron’s thirteenth studio recording was co-produced at The Bathouse Studios in Kingston, Ontario by longtime drummer and collaborator Don Kerr and Sexsmith. The album is his first to include Ron’s touring band.

Since making his major-label debut in 1995, Ron Sexsmith has become recognized worldwide as one of Canada’s most reknowned songwriters.  He counts among his fans no less than Elvis Costello, Elton John and Paul McCartney and has amassed no less than eight Juno Award nominations as Songwriter of the Year.

“At this point, it’s just second nature for me to write short, melodic songs that say everything I want to say,” says Sexsmith. “But having my band totally involved on this album maybe brought out more in the songs than on other recent albums. It felt special, anyway.”

On the album’s most poignant moments, such as ‘Man At The Gate (1913)’, there certainly is a sense—as with all of Sexsmith’s best songs—that life is often richer than we make it out be, and we should embrace that. In this case, the point is made through a photograph taken a century ago in front of Toronto’s Trinity-Bellwoods park, conveying the message that although styles and attitudes change, we all remain connected through our shared humanity. It all sprang from Sexsmith simply buying a postcard at a shop near his house one day.

“In the photograph, there’s a man walking by the gates of the park, and you can barely see him, but that’s the kind of thing I easily get obsessed about,” he says. “I couldn’t stop thinking that that guy could be me 100 years later, and really could be all of us. We’re here for a certain period of time, and we leave behind these traces of who we were that have the potential to inspire people who come along after we’re gone. To me, that’s really beautiful.”

Although Ron Sexsmith has more music to come that is sure to inspire us, for now The Last Rider is the latest addition to a body of work as impressive as any produced in the past quarter-century. Through truth and simplicity, Sexsmith’s songs help us get closer to the things that make us better people, meaning that an album like The Last Rider is as necessary now as anything he has ever done.

The Last Rider will be released April 21st, 2017 on Compass Records.

Jenn Grant announces deluxe reissue of Compostela

Jenn Grant announces the release of deluxe edition of her double JUNO nominated album, Compostela. Set for release on 4th December 2015, the expanded album includes a French version of Bombshell, a spine tingling cover of Hunters and Collectors classic ‘Throw Your Arms’, as well as acoustic takes of album originals  ‘Mauve’, ‘Bring Me A Rose’ and JUNO Nominated Songwriter of the Year track ‘Trailer Park’.

Speaking on the deluxe edition Jenn says:

“It’s almost been a year since Compostela was first released and it’s been amazing to tour around the world with this record. I’m so proud of everything that has come from it. This deluxe edition sees me recorded in French for the very first time  and recording a cover version of Hunters and Collector track that I performed on my first Australian tour. I wanted to sing a song that connected with that audience but also be able to give it my own style. Some songs just fit your voice like a glove, and this one feels that way to me.

Compostela translates to “Field of Stars” Or “Star Field” and  the album features a band of stars, including Sarah Harmer, Buck 65, Ron Sexsmith, Rose Cousins, Don Kerr, Kim Harris, Stewart Legere, Justin Rutledge, and Rachel Sermanni. Compostela was produced by Jenn’s husband and renowned producer Daniel Ledwell.

Compostela was nominated for two major Canadian music awards on release JUNO 2015 Adult Alternative Album of the Year and Songwriter of the Year and has seen Jenn play sold out shows across North America, Europe and Australia. With 175 of dates so far in 2015 and counting, Jenn sees out 2015 with an Australian tour and five Music Nova Scotia nominations and three Canadian Folk Awards.

New Ron Sexsmith album CAROUSEL ONE out March 31st

carousel one

(Nashville, TN) March 16, 2014 – Canadian singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith is preparing for the release of his new studio album, Carousel One, out in North America on Tuesday, March 31, 2015. The album will be released in the U.S. via Compass Records and in his home country by Warner Music Canada.

Carousel One, produced by Jim Scott, features 14 new Sexsmith originals. It was recorded with an incredible cast of musicians including bass player Bob Glaub (John Lennon, Lucinda Williams, Jackson Browne), guitarist Jon Graboff (John Lee Hooker, Dr John), drummer Don Heffington (Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris), and keyboard player John Ginty (Dixie Chicks).

Carousel One finds Sexsmith in surprising territory for a man often pegged as a downbeat balladeer: he’s actually contented. “I didn’t realize until we were putting the songs together for Carousel One that this would be more outgoing. There’s a lot more humour,” says Ron. “I mean, there’s even a smiling picture on the cover, which I’ve just never had before. I just hope it doesn’t scare the children.”

“Sexsmith has proven himself a storyteller and musician worthy of the praise he’s received.” –Paste

‘Saint Bernard’, the first single taken from Carousel One:

The first single off Carousel One, ‘Saint Bernard’,  is a tribute to an anonymous family dog from a photograph picked up in a second-hand shop by Ron’s wife.

“They’ve always been my favorite type of dog,” says Ron, recalling the genesis of the song. “I was sitting in the kitchen one day playing guitar. I had this melody but no lyrics, so I looked up at the picture and just started singing the opening lines. I guess the album is kind of a travelogue of music that I like which was mostly a happy accident.”

BLUES TRAVELER – SUZIE CRACKS the WHIP

BLUES TRAVELER SUZIE CRACKS the WHIPBlues Travelers loose bluesy sound can’t always give away their Canadian origins, but I believe they have managed to reflect the themes of a continent in their wide open tunes. The 2012 offering, Suzie Cracks the Whip moves away from the Californian rock of the previous releases like North Hollywood Shootout and gives us a much softer sound with some catchy pop hooks. However, some of new material was familiar and comparisons could be drawn to earlier work which was strongest on the track Big City Girls. Current line-up features: John Popper (vocals, harmonica), Chan Kinchla (guitars), Tad Kinchla (bass), Ben Wilson (keyboards) and Brendan Hill (drums, percussion). KATIE MELUA ALBUM NEWS

Secret Symphony’, the brand new album by Katie Melua, will be released on March 5th, 2012. Katie Melua takes the stage in front of the Secret Symphony Orchestra, on this, her fifth album. Always happy to step away from people’s expectations, Katie delivers a superbly crafted set of tracks interpreting songs drawn from a wide spectrum of songwriters including herself and Mike Batt.

This album was going to be my ‘singer’s album‘ says Katie. I had always wanted to do this one day; singing other people’s songs brings something out of you and your voice that isn’t perhaps where you would have gone vocally with your own material. It stretches you. As it happened Mike and I did write a couple of new ones, but the general idea was to find songs by great writers such as Ron Sexsmith (‘Gold In Them Hills‘) and a favourite song of mine, originally recorded by Bonnie Raitt (‘Too Long At The Fair’) plus some more well known ones likeKeeping The Dream Alive‘.” Continue reading KATIE MELUA ALBUM NEWS
